Questions

How is the property compared with built solar farms?

Site by site, measured the way the farms are. The property is split into sites the size of a solar farm, circles of 500 m radius, each wholly inside the lots. Each site is measured as each built farm is at its centre: straight-line distance to the nearest substation and to the nearest 66 kV or higher line, solar yield at the centre, and average slope within 500 m. Each site is graded as the land check grades a point, against Australia's operating solar farms of 5 MW or more, with the property's own area: under 20 ha the grade is at most C, and over 300 ha the site is also compared with farms of 100 MW or more. The property isn't graded when half or more of it is protected, built up or water, or when its edge is more than 100 km from a substation. The best site is the one with the best grade, then the closest to the grid and flattest overall; the typical site is the middle one. A lot too small for one site is measured at a point inside it.

Why is the distance from the edge shorter than from the best site?

A large property reaches farther, so its nearest edge is closer to things than any one site on it. The ranking uses sites, measured as built farms are; the edge distance is shown beside it.

How is the whole property measured?

Solar yield and slope are averaged over every grid cell whose centre falls inside the lots: cells of about 1 km for yield and about 90 m for slope. A property smaller than one yield cell takes the value at its centre. Land use is the area of each class at 50 m. The slope bands are plain bins, not a judgement.

Where do the lot boundaries come from?

NSW lots: cadastre © State of NSW (Spatial Services), CC BY 3.0 AU. Queensland lots: the Digital Cadastral Database © State of Queensland (Department of Resources), CC BY 4.0. Each lot is read when first asked for and kept for 30 days. Lots within 60 m of the property, across a road for example, are offered as adjoining lots. A lot is a parcel of land, not a title or an owner: no ownership details are read or shown.

Where do the addresses come from?

From each state's own address service, read when you search: NSW Spatial Services, Queensland's address database and Vicmap Address. Addresses: © State of NSW (Spatial Services), CC BY 3.0 AU; © State of Queensland (Department of Resources), CC BY 4.0; Vicmap Address © State of Victoria, CC BY 4.0. Towns: ABS Suburbs and Localities 2021, CC BY 4.0.

Why only NSW and Queensland?

Property selection covers NSW and Queensland so far, whose cadastres can be read openly lot by lot. Everywhere else the land check works by point. Address search also covers Victoria.

Is this property stored?

Each report stores its lot numbers, the result and the date, at the property's centre rounded to about 100 m. If you answer the hosting question, that is saved with it. See the privacy page.
