Questions

Why are some farms outlines and others circles?

A built farm is drawn as its outline where OpenStreetMap maps it (© OpenStreetMap contributors). A proposed farm referred under the EPBC Act shows its referral area as a dashed line: the area referred, which is often larger than the farm. Every other farm is a circle sized by its capacity: filled when operating, a ring when in the pipeline, and a thin ring when its location is only approximate. Zoom in to see outlines.

Where does the data come from?

AEMO NEM Generation Information, July 2026 (status and capacity of every NEM solar farm), Geoscience Australia's Major Power Stations layer (locations, CC BY 4.0), the register of accredited power stations and the committed and probable lists of the Clean Energy Regulator (CER) (CC BY 4.0), and EPBC Act referrals from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) (CC BY 4.0). The sources are matched by name, region and capacity. A farm placed at the centre of its EPBC referral area, or at the centre of its postcode when only the CER lists it, is approximate. Farms with no location are in the table only. Outlines of built farms are from OpenStreetMap, matched to these farms by name and position.

Why is Western Australia only partly covered?

Western Australia is outside the National Electricity Market, so AEMO's Generation Information doesn't list its solar farms. WA farms come from Geoscience Australia, the CER and DCCEEW's EPBC referrals only, so some WA farms and most WA proposals are missing. The Northern Territory is the same.

What do the statuses mean?

Operating, commissioning, committed and anticipated are AEMO's stages. Proposed means publicly announced to AEMO, on the CER's probable list, or referred under the EPBC Act. A referral says a project was proposed, not that it will be built. Withdrawn projects are not shown. In the pipeline is every farm that is commissioning, committed, anticipated or proposed.

How many solar farms also farm the land?

At least 10 of Australia's 190 operating solar farms of 5 MW or more have a public source saying sheep, cattle or crops are on site. Agrivoltaics, or agrisolar, means producing solar power and farming on the same land, usually by grazing sheep under the panels; many solar farms run no stock at all. Records are found by automated web search, then code checks, then two independent automated classifiers, with no person reviewing them. A record is kept only when the page is online, the quote appears on it word for word, the page names the farm close to the quote, and both classifiers agree on whether it says sheep, cattle or crops, now or planned (descriptions of the land before the farm are not shown). The count is of operating farms of 5 MW or more with a present-tense record, and says "at least" because many farms were not searched or have no public page. Each farm page quotes and links its source; the table's "Livestock or crops" filter lists the farms with a record. This site does not rate any farm.

Why is a farm I know missing?

Rooftop and small systems are not solar farms, so a station that only the CER lists is shown only when its name calls it a solar farm, and accredited stations under 5 MW are left out. Some small ground-mounted farms with company names are missed by that rule.

How do I send a correction?

Each farm page has a "Suggest a correction" link. If a farm is missing, or a quote is out of date, email support@energyfigures.com with a link to a public source.
